T15. Designing and Implementing Streetscape - NRP Information Workshop
In this workshop, Barbara Lukermann, Maria Zimmerman and Deb Martin of the University of Minnesota present findings from their study of the Nicollet Avenue Task Force's work to develop a plan for and revitalization strategy for the street from downtown to Lake Street. Their findings can provide lessons and ideas for other neighborhoods working on commercial projects.

This tape shows examples of three different kinds of contracts and includes an excerise in writing a contract based on one neighborhood's approved NRP Action Plan. The workshop features Hillary Freeman of the staff of the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan and Ruben Acosta, an attorney with the Minneapolis Community Development Agency.

T19. Personnel Issues - Information Workshop
A staffperson or staffpeople can be very beneficial to a neighborhood group, but issues surrounding staff can also take up much of an organization's time if they are unprepared for the task. Robert Thompson, a staffperson for Citizens for a Loring Park Community, explains the role of staff in a neighborhood organization and provides ideas on how staff and board can clarify their roles so they function well together.

T20. Tax Information for Neighborhood Organizations - Information Workshop
Even though many neighborhood organizations operate as organizations exempt from taxes, they still need to file with the IRS and the State of Minnesota. This tape covers 501(c)3 status and how to file for it, the 990 forms that nonprofits must file with the federal government, state filing requirements and unrelated business income.

T21. Jim Mundell: Traffic Calming in Seattle - Information Workshop
Seattle traffic engineer Jim Mundell presents information and images of the city's traffic calming programs. Particular emphasis is placed on the public participation end of the program and the city's successful traffic circle program.

T22. Employee Tax Information
Presenters from the State of Minnesota Department of Revenue, the Internal Revenue Service and the Minnesota Department of Economic Security discuss the taxes and filing procedures that organizations with employees must know about. The tape answers questions about which forms are necessary and how to fill them out. Information is included on Unemployment taxes, Social Security, withholding, calculating taxes, and how to file.

T23. Neighborhood Bookkeeping 101
Members of the Minnesota Accounting Aid Society guide you through a model of neighborhood bookkeeping. The first half of a tape is a guide to general bookkeeping issues, like how to keep on schedule and computer software. The second half takes you step-by-step through a model of how a neighborhood association could keep its books, following invoices and checks through to the paperwork required for the NRP process.

T24. Pulling in Under-represented Groups
Organizers from the Training Program for Neighborhood Organizers lead a discussion about ways to draw in members of the community not normally involved in the work of a neighborhood organization.

Members of the Minnesota Accounting Aid Society and staff from the State Auditor's Office tell you what auditors are looking for when they review the books of your neighborhood organization. This training tells you how you can better prepare for their visit by insuring that you records will be arranged in a manner that will make the audit less painful.

How does a neighborhood group sustain itself as an organization and keep and build involvement? These are some of the issues addressed in this training session. Joe Horan of the NRP provides ideas on the level of activity that a neighborhood organization can support while Jay Clark, Krista Hong and Marjorie Spayl provide concrete examples of how several neighborhoods have built involvement.

A Panel discussion from the Training Program for Neighborhood Organizers that features Joy Palmer of the Headwaters Foundation, Carolyn Rody of the Norwest Foundation, Louis Hohlfeld of the McKnight Foundation. These three speak about the Foundations they represent and what they look for in application. Three presenters who have written proposals to foundations and speak about their success include Jackie Starr of Operation Outreach, Jana Metge of the Central Neighborhood Improvement Association and Deb Wolking of the Seward Neighorhood Group.

"Increasing Bus Ridership" features a look at the East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood's bus ridership survey. The tape is an abridged version of the panel discussion including Shehryar Sarwar, an intern who developed the survey, John Dillery and Jim Machitelli of Metro Transit, and Ken Sheehan of the East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association's Transportation Committee.

Viable Neighborhood Commercial Nodes is the video version of a workshop held by the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood to discuss a study they made of the viability of their commercial corners. Panelists include Rebecca Yanisch of the Minneapolis Community Development Agency, Paul Farmer of the Minneapolis Planning Department, Mike Gramling and Scott Hawkins of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association, and Joel Spoonheim, a research assistant who conducted the study.
